Sustainability

The word Sustainability is from the Latin word ‘sustinere’ (tenere, to hold; sub, up). Sustain can mean “maintain”, “support”, or “endure”. Sustainability can be defined as the practice of reserving resources for future generations without causing harm to the natural environment. Achieving sustainability will enable the earth to continue supporting human life.
Since the 1980’s sustainability has been used more in the sense of human sustainability on planet Earth and this has resulted in the most widely quoted definition of sustainability as a part of the concept sustainable development, that of the Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. To Green Touches sustainability means adding value in the economic, environmental, and social spheres. This triple bottom-line approach has been adopted since Green Touches’ establishment, our long-term targets are set to fulfill our stated mission & vision, to eliminate the use of toxic chemicals both in domestic and commercial cleaning and to create a clean, healthy living and working environment for present and future generations.

In 2015, 193 countries agreed on a global agenda to tackle some of humanity’s biggest challenges, from climate change to good health and wellbeing etc and together with partners, governments, NGOs, businesses and communities to drive this sustainable agenda for the greater common good.
The UAE is cognisant of these environmental issues and they have reconfirmed their commitment in Vision UAE 2021.  Therefore, a need has been identified within the UAE & Middle East to reduce the carbon footprint, and we responded to this need by establishing Green Touches Ecological Cleaning Services based on our knowledge and expertise in sustainable living.  Green touches decided to play an active role in catalyzing sustainable solutions to some of these problems. Our service is a knowledge sharing organization that is part of a greater global shift in attitudes and understanding of our environment.  We are committed proponents of promoting a greener planet and we strive to implement the Vision UAE 2021 to be one of the world’s most sustainable countries.  We choose sustainable green cleaning as we believe that this is the ‘key to sustainability’. It is a sector with wider social and human benefits. Health protection was, and always will be, the primary benefit of cleaning.

Green cleaning is as important as other initiatives for achieving sustainability:

  • It supports other green activities that can help reduce the large amount of energy and water that buildings consume.
  • It aids in the reduction of operational costs.
  • Improves indoor air quality.
  • Improves employee performance and productivity.
  • Increases building valuation.
  • It is a significant marketing tool and a requirement for businesses and homeowners seeking LEED certification.
  • It is an approach to redress the problems associated with traditional cleaning i.e. elimination of toxic chemicals.

The Basic Principles of Sustainability

The organizing principles for sustainability is sustainable development, which includes three basic interconnected principles: Social, Economic and Environmental. A healthy ecosystem and environments are very necessary to the survival of humans and other organisms. Sustainability is a social challenge and sustainable living is a reorganization of society. Science and technology can help to develop green buildings, sustainable agriculture, sustainable power and sustainable cities. It is an adjustment of individual lifestyles that conserve natural resources.
We need to find ways to reduce our negative impact on our environment, this can be achieved by various environmental management agencies and resource management and environmental protection agencies and strong government policies. This can be achieved by countries adopting environmentally friendly national and international laws.

Earth Charter

The Earth Charter is an international declaration of fundamental values and principles considered useful by its supporters for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. Created by a global consultation process, and endorsed by organisations representing millions of people, the Charter “seeks to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well- being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations”.
The idea of an Earth Charter began in 1968 by Maurice Strong and Mikhail Gorbachev. Prompted by the United Nations’ call for a new charter to guide the transition to sustainable development, The Earth Charter is the first document written that covers basic values and principles for sustainable living. The document contains four pillars and sixteen main principles and opens with a preamble:

Earth Charter Preamble

“We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Toward this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations”. The Charter concluded with the powerful words “The Way Forward”.

This Charter was finally adopted at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in March 2000 .Learn more

Implementation of Sustainable Goals

The United Nations General Assembly Working Group of August 2014 put forward 17 sustainable development goals among others, “to making cities more sustainable, combating climate change, and protecting oceans and forests”. Learn more
The implementation of these sustainable goals are not wholly the responsibility of governments but of institutions, companies and the individual. We at Green Touches believe in the principle of shared responsibility and we have made ‘Our Mission’ and ‘Our Vision’ to reflect this.
We go far beyond the limited horizons of just making a profit. We strive to improve quality of life for present and future generations.
